Lesson Highlights
 
Jesus would perform many miracles during his lifetime. One example can be found in our lesson today. Mark chapter 9- verse 14-29 shows us a father who was in need of a miracle for his son who was believed to have a demonic spirit that had overtaken him and had afflicted him. The lesson begins with an argument between the disciples and the scribes. It is unclear on the actual reason of this agreement; however, it is believed that this argument stemmed from the disciples’ inability to cast this dump spirit out of the man’s son. This is not an unusual occurrence with the scribes, because they were also trying to find fault with Jesus and his disciples’ doing the will of God.

According to Matthew 10:1 these nine disciples in today’s lesson had previously been given authority by Jesus, to drive out demonic spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. However, the disciples were ineffective in helping this man’s son.
 
How many times have God been unhappy with us when we do not use the Spiritual gift or gifts he has given to the believer?
   
Jesus asked a question regarding this dispute (after he had left the mount of transfiguration). A man in the crowd explained to Jesus that he had brought his son who was possessed by a spirit that had robbed him of his speech. This spirit would throw him down and cause him to foam at the mouth.  After Jesus heard this man’s need for his son to be healed and it was made known that the disciples could not cast this spirit out of the man’s son Jesus was vexed with dismay. Jesus requested for this boy to be brought to him. When they brought the man’s son to Jesus he fell down on the ground in a convulsion. It is worth noting that this man’s son was going before Jesus who had all power and authority given to him by God to cast this demon spirit out of him; however, the spirit that was in this boy continued to try to take his life to the very end. After Jesus had cast the demon spirit out of this boy the man’s son look like he was dead. Remember when Jesus speaks something has to change. As this boy look lifeless on the ground to the onlookers, Jesus lifted him up to a new and improved life.  Jesus explained to the disciples the reason they were powerless in the ability to cast the demon out of the man’s son because they were trusting in themselves; instead, of the power of God. Also, Jesus emphasized that some certain and specific things come by fasting and praying.
 
Many times we must spend quality time seeking the will of God by denying ourselves some of the pleasures we enjoy so that God can give us direction for our lives.

HOME DAILY BIBLE READINGS
   
In this lesson God gives specific instructions to Moses for the children of Israel on how to celebrate the Festival of Booths. It was a time of happiness, rejoicing and also a reminder of what God had done in providing for his children. He had provided their every need! The Festival was to last seven days with day 1 and day 8 being complete days of rest. Note that the Festival was God ordained - not just your regular "annual day." Not a fundraiser, but a time set aside to honor God - a time of Holiness and presentations of special gifts to the Lord.  It was stated that they should celebrate with joy before the Lord your God for seven days!  During the Festival they were also to live outside in small shelters or booths.  This action would remind them of how God had delivered them from the Land of Egypt.  By doing this every year at the God appointed time, they along with their children and generations to come would remember the goodness and greatness of God.

How can we apply this lesson to our lives today?  What does it teach us?
 
First, we must be obedient in following God's instructions for our lives.  Many times we fail because of our disobedience to God's will for us.  We must obey God's instructions.  Secondly, we must always remember God's goodness towards us.  Sometimes we get overwhelmed with the cares of this world.  We must always take time to read and reflect on God's word; spend time with God on a daily basis so that when these times come, and they will come, we will remember the faithfulness of our God.  Thirdly, we must tell our children, grandchildren, and generations to come about our God and how He has saved us, provided for us, and kept us through the years.  These things should be passed from generation to generation. How else will they know?  It is a good idea to have special family and church celebrations to honor God! Always remembering His goodness and great faithfulness and thanking Him for His continued care and blessings for us.  We must continue to tell the story!

Atonement:      reparation or expiation for sin; the reconciliation of God and humankind
                          through Jesus Christ.
 
The scene in Chapter 16 took place in the tabernacle at the Ark of the Covenant, or mercy seat, which was considered the place where God dwelled.
 
In the book of Leviticus, God tells the Israelites and their priests how to make offerings in the Tabernacle and how to conduct themselves while they were camped around the holy tent (sanctuary).  In the today’s lesson God gives Moses specific instructions to tell his brother Aaron how to come into the Most Holy Place behind the curtain, in front of the atonement cover, or the Ark.  If Aaron did not follow the instructions specifically, he would surely die (16:1-10).
 
The Day of Atonement was performed once a year; and was a day of worship and sacrifice, but it was also a day of sorrow, repentance, and humiliation over the sins committed before God. The ritual could only be performed by the high priest and conducted exactly as God himself had instructed. Although Aaron was the high priest for all of Israel, he had to cleanse himself first and then cleanse his family, before he could enter into the presence of the Lord (verses 11-14).  All the animals that were being used as the sacrifices were to be unblemished/perfect/without defect.
 
God wants our best at all times.
 
Conclusion
God is a good and merciful God.  HE is a God of love, patience, kindness, caring, and He is a forgiving God.  He is a God who loves us and He knew all about us before we were created.  He knew that we were not going to make it by way of the law.  He knew that the high priest was not going to be able to stand in the gap for the people forever.  He made a way.
 
Yes God made a way for us to be reconciled back to Him.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believed in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16).  Thank God for Jesus.  Jesus was the Supreme Sacrifice.  He was the Perfect Sacrifice – unblemished, no defect.  Jesus was a once and for all sacrifice.  He did it “God’s” way.  He was obedient to the very end.  Now we are able to go to Him for ourselves for forgiveness of our sins.  He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1John 1:9).
 
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear.  What a privilege to carry everything to Him in prayer.  He says we can come as we are.  We have to perform any rituals to come before His presence in the sanctuary.  We can be in His presence wherever we are because as beliers, He is in us and we are in Him.
 
Let us continue to grow in our relationships with the Lord, trust.

As I studied this week’s Church School lesson, a couple of things came to mind.  One is how often God gives us direction and we in-turn, go our own way.  I remember when my kids were little, and we would get toys for them; most of the time back then, they would have to be put together.  So what I did was look at the picture on the box and went from there.
 
What do you think happened?  Don’t raise your hand.
 
I had more parts left over than should have been.  I looked at the picture, instead of following the direction.  But note, when we follow God’s plan it always works out as it did in today’s lesson.  We should also remember that our harvest is not just for us alone, but for those who not have as much.
 
I pray that this lesson highlights will bless each of you.
